Power Generation

FastEDR is designed to remove seized fasteners from high-value rotating components. Gas turbines generate electricity for the grid and data centres, to power remote oil and gas operations, and to propel ships.

They share much of their design with the aero engines that FastEDR has been used on for years, and they present the same challenges: stuck bolts, stripped screws, blade locks, pins and broken drill bits, often in the hottest sections of the engine, that must be removed without damaging the parent component – sometimes after drilling or an easy-out screw extractor has already failed.

Our electrical-discharge-based machining process allows for the rapid removal of any metallic alloy fastener, with no heat, force or chemicals applied to the surrounding part, either on site or in the workshop.

Benefits for the Power Generation sector

  • FastEDR removes seized fasteners in the same amount of time, every time, without the variability of manual drilling. This reduces the unpredictable delays that extend outages and keep turbines out of service.
  • With demand for power outpacing new turbine production, in large part due to data centre construction for AI, operators are keeping existing units running for longer. Because FastEDR applies no heat, force or chemicals, it greatly reduces the risk of damage to rotors, discs and casings that leads to additional repairs and extra downtime.
  • Our optional robotic integration and custom fixtures allow fasteners to be reached behind ducts and covers, and remove the operator health risks associated with traditional drilling.

It's already in use with aviation engine MROs such as SR Technics, and we're now working with independent MROs in the power generation sector on the removal of seized fasteners and stuck balancing plugs. FastEDR can be applied to gas turbines including the aeroderivative GE Vernova LM2500 and Rolls-Royce-derived models such as the Industrial Avon, now supported by Siemens Energy.

Gas turbine applications don’t tend to suit off-the-shelf tools. Industrial gas turbine blades can be considerably larger than those on aero engines such as the CFM56, so fixtures need to be designed around each engine.
